beach-combingBrookings Oregon and the Chetco River a small seaport town is located just 7 miles north of the California / Oregon boarder.  With a combined population of about 7500 year around residence  in the a jointing towns of Brookings / Harbor Oregon, the area’s population does soar during the summer months as it has a very pleasant summer climate that draws those wishing to escape the high summer temperatures found inland to a more pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. Numerous RV Parks and restaurants are found here as well as good shopping for a small coastal town.

Harris Beach State Park on the north end of Brookings draws many visitors year around to view the ocean and walk the beautiful beaches. Brookings is known as the banana belt of Oregon for its mild climate. Great Ocean fishing thanks to the safest and flattest ocean bar in Oregon. The Chetco River is a jewel to fish for King Salmon & Steelhead Nov. through March.

Chetco River Fishing at Brookings Oregon

The Chetco River is federally designated as a Wild and Scenic River about 50 miles in length located in far Southern Oregon, just 7 miles North of the California state line. The Chetco River is loved for its beauty and great runs of Fall Chinook and Winter Steelhead. The river is fishable after October rains begin until it closes the end of March. With great bank fishing access and easy drift boat fishing it is one of the states best Fall Salmon and Steelhead Rivers.

Several Charter Fishing Services make Brookings-Harbor their base. The Sea Port of Brookings is Oregon’s best bet for Chinook Salmon with a high catch success. Bottom fish are also found in abundance. When conditions warrant Captains will pursue Albacore Tuna also. Whale Watching trips are also offered. It is best to contact one of our local Skippers for best local season and space information.

December through March:

Best bets for Chetco River Steelhead fishing near Brookings Oregon occurs in December thru March peak being late January and February. Some of the best Winter Steelhead fishing found in the country is available to both bank fishermen and boat users. For Steelhead Bank Fishing the style used drift fishing from boats or bank and plunking when water flows are high.

Chetco River Fall King Salmon Fishing

 The Chetco Fall King Salmon run is famous for its trophy quality salmon, every year Kings over 50# are landed with a few pushing #60. In October the best bet is either the special Chetco Trophy King Salmon Ocean opener or trolling the Chetco estuary.

In November fall rains move the Big Kings upriver where both drift boat and bank fishermen seek the high quality kings of the Chetco River. By December few Kings of quality remain and action shifts to Winter Steelhead.
